In our pediatrics class, we recently learned of a recipe for soothing gum oil for teething babies. I recently made it and used it on my 8-month-old teething daughter, Alice, and it worked like a charm.
Ingredients are simple:
- 1oz high-quality olive oil.
- 1-2 drops clove oil.
Mix the two together in a container and voila – you’re done. I swipe a dab onto Alice’s gums when she’s feeling cranky, and she seems instantly better.
Clove is known to be an anodyne in dentistry (painkiller). The main active constituents of clove oil are eugenol, responsible for the scent, and methyl salicylate, which helps with analgesic effects, like aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid).
Be careful to only add one or at most two drops to the ounce of olive oil because this is a potent herb with numerous side effects in high doses, including mucosal tissue irritation. For now, in the land of natural teething, I’ll be sticking to this gum oil as well as my homeopathic and other ideas are seen here, and a classmate shared a new idea – freezing washcloths soaked in chamomile tea!
